Class notes
5/4/08
Here are the final results. The score for Exam 3 is out of 46 points (I dropped 4 items for bad performance), and the total score for the class is out of 141 possible points. The cut-offs for final grades were as follows: 110 points for A; 98 points for B; 84 points for C; 67 points for D. I set these cut-offs before adding extra credit, and many people were able to raise their grade because of their conscientious completion of the on-line assignments. Good for you!
Everyone have a great summer and if you are graduating, congratulations and good luck!
4/26/08
Information about the final exam:
NOT cumulative
50 mc questions, as on previous exams
8 from book sections not directly addressed in lectures
Topic distribution: The unconscious (12); self, future, and control theories (12); personality disorders (7); forensics and the MMPI (6); health (5)
See you on Friday at 1:00!

I copied and pasted the review session questions directly from the data collector yesterday without realizing that I had to make a special request to see more than the first 10 responses. As a result, there were some questions that I didn't address (and probably wouldn't have had time to get to anyway). So, here are responses to the rest of the questions. Not to worry, I downloaded the data for the data collection assignments, so none of your data were lost that way.
4/23/08
Here are the slides for the review session.
All the online data collection assignments are now complete. In the interest of calculating class-wide and individual completeness (hint: this latter may become important), please download and review this summary of ID numbers and completeness (updated 4/23). If you find that your percent complete data looks low to you, see if you can't figure out what other ID number you submitted the rest of your data under. I can correct mistakes until the last day of classes (April 25). After that time, I will delete the raw data and the percent completeness in this list will become an irreversible score.
If you have books that you can't sell or would prefer to donate to a worthy cause:
A book drive will be held across the UK campus during finals week, April 28-May 2, 2008. Boxes will be placed at various locations on campus for students to donate their textbooks. Textbooks donated should be 2000 or newer editions. Books may be dropped off at the following locations: in the main lobby of the UK Student Center (near the UK Bookstore), near Starbucks at the UK Student Center, at the entrances of the White Hall Classroom Building, in the Patterson Office Tower lobby, in the CCO office in the UK Student Center, in Dickey Hall, at Kennedy Bookstore and outside the Medical Library in the Medical Science Building. The books donated will benefit the American University of Afghanistan and Kabul Medical University.

The Personality of 313 link is now open for you to submit your questions for the review session on Wednesday.
If you haven't already, please see information below about the data collection assignments.

The Personality of 313 link is now open. This new assignment will be due at midnight on Saturday, April 12. This is the last assignment, so make it count!
Here are the lecture slides for Chapter 11.3/30/08
Here are the lecture slides for Chapter 9.
The REQUIRED IAT data collection assignment is due at midnight on Monday, March 31. See below for details. As of right now, only 42 people have submitted their data. The dataset is on the borderline for the extra credit, so make sure you submit your data on time.
3/26/08
Here are the results of the second exam and provisional grades for your total score so far. Because the final curve will depend on your total score at the end of the semester (before any extra credit), these are guidelines as to how you are doing rather than hard and fast grades. I dropped two items (more about that next Monday), so the Exam 2 score is out of a total of 48 possible.
The data collection assignment requires you to take a test on the web and enter your results through the usual data entry link. The test is called the Implicit Association Test (IAT). There are several different tests that you can select, but you should select the "Weight" IAT. To take the IAT, click here.
3/11/08
The Personality of 313 website is now open so that you can submit your questions for the review session on March 19 that precedes the exam on March 24.
This review session is your chance to ask me any question you want before the exam. I will not be able to answer individual emails with questions after this review session.
There will be NO CLASS on Wednesday, March 26 (I will be away at a conference).
3/2/08
Here are the lecture slides for Chapters 6 and 7.
The class preceding the exam (March 19) will again be a review session, and the Personality of 313 website will be opened over Spring Break for you to start submitting questions.
2/28/08
The data collection site is now open if you are one of the people who still needs to submit your own BFT test data (see the data collection results slides).
2/23/08
Here are the lecture slides for Chapter 5. And here are the slides with the data collection results.
Here are the scores for Exam 1, along with provisional grades. Because the final curve will depend on your total score at the end of the semester (before any extra credit) rather than individual scores, these are guidelines as to how you are doing rather than hard and fast grades. I dropped three items (more about that on Monday), so the score is out of a total of 47 possible.
Remember to complete the new data assignment, due on Monday! Only 59 people have responded so far.
2/17/08
The new data assignment has to do with biology and genetics. For this assignment, visit or call up a first degree biological relative (full sibling, parent, or child - but make sure they're old enough to understand!) and give them the Big 5 Test from the book, then either you or they can enter their scores through the Personality of 313 link. Please pay special attention to these instructions:
1. If you are an identical twin and your twin is also in the class, do not use each other but do use different relatives (e.g., mother and father).
2. If you do not have or do not know any first-degree biological relatives (e.g., you are adopted), give the test to a biologically unrelated relative (e.g., an adopted sibling or step-parent); there will be a place to indicate this strategy on the survey.
3. Please do not use half-siblings (one parent in common), as this can mess up the results.
These data will be due by Monday, February 25 - that is to say, you have a week or more to collect and enter them. Remember that I am out of town and there is no class on Wednesday this week.
2/13/08
Here are the slides for the review session.
2/9/08
Here are the lecture slides for interpersonal theory/circle/circumplex. If you are interested, here is a short biography of Timothy Leary, who got much more famous for his later activities than for developing the circle, and here is a commentary by Leary following a symposium in his honor at the American Psychological Association convention that gives you a great sense of his personality.
Here is a site that will give you a rough idea of your own circumplex structure.
2/6/08
I want to draw your attention to The Study, which is a great resource for study advice and skills (check out their tip of the day!), and particularly to the free tutoring service. Psychology tutors are available in the evenings Sunday through Thursday. For more information, link to The Study website.
The Personality of 313 website is now open for you to submit questions to be covered in the review session on February 13th, as well as Assignment 1 data, if you have not yet submitted those data. Here is a list of people who have not submitted Assignment 1 data (although many completed the poll, so I know you're out there!) If all these people submitted Assignment 1 data, the completion rate would get up to 76%.

2/4/08
Here are the lecture slides for Chapter 4.
Response to the class poll was helpful but skimpy (66 people responded). This is a reminder that although they are anonymous, these data collection assignments are required.
1/30/08
Here are the expanded lecture slides for Chapter 3, including the self-test.
The class poll will be open through Saturday. Use the Personality of 313 link to submit your data.
1/29/08
There will be a class poll regarding the lecture format, use of the website, and so on. This poll will count toward data collection, so be sure to participate. It will start on Wednesday after class and run through Saturday. If your ID number was up on the first of the Chapter 3 slides, or if you have not submitted data yet, you can also submit your demographic information and BFT results to make the dataset more complete.
Looking forward to the first exam:
1. There will be a self-test on Wednesday, January 30, over the lecture material so far. It will not cover the readings, but that material will be on the exam.
2. There will be a review session during class on Wednesday, February 13. This will be an all-request session, so bring your questions.
3. I will be away from February 16 to February 21. The first exam will be on February 18, as scheduled, and proctored by a Psychology graduate student. If you have questions for me about the test, please bring them to the review session. There will be NO CLASS on Wednesday, February 20.
1/22/08
Here are the lecture slides that go with the first part of Chapter 3.
1/16/08
The second data collection assignment is up and running. You must submit your data by the end of Saturday, January 19 to keep up your 90% average.
Note that the lecture slides for Chapters 1 and 2 have been updated.
No class on Monday, January 21, for the MLK Jr. holiday.
1/13/08
Here are the lecture slides that go along with Chapters 1 and 2. Also, please note that there WILL be class on Wednesday, February 6.
1/9/08
The first data collection assignment is up and running. Please submit your data by Friday, January 11. Remember that you will need your scores from the BFT on p. 28 of the book.
Next Wednesday (1/16/08), a representative from the UK Violence Intervention and Prevention Center will be coming to talk about their SEEDS training program, which trains students to be proactive leaders in violence prevention. The training is all day January 26 or 27, includes meals, and is free for UK students. You can preview a flyer about the program here.
1/9/08
I will be out of town intermittently throughout the semester. Please note the following dates that I will definitely be away; there will likely be more added later. Unless specifically noted on the syllabus or here in the class notes, there will be class during these days . However, you won't find me in my office or at my phone. Most of the time, I will be accessible by email but might not have access to specific information (e.g., your most recent test grade).
